Eligibility
You can use Google Checkout to collect donations if you:
- Are based in the United States.
- Represent a valid 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization.
- Clearly display your organization's tax-exempt status on your website.
- Complete the verification process.
You may not use Google Checkout to collect donations if your organization is designated:
- 501(c)(1)
- 501(c)(2)
- 501(c)(14)
Important: Your account may be suspended if you're accepting donations via Google Checkout, but you do not represent a valid 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization.
Transaction fees
Free transaction processing is available for non-profits that are part of the Google Grants program. All other non-profits will be charged our standard transaction fees. Google Checkout has no monthly, setup, or gateway fees. Learn more about receiving free transaction processing for your non-profit organization.
Any transactions not conforming to the Checkout eligibility guidelines above or content policies won't qualify for free donation processing. We reserve the right to impose reasonable limits at our discretion.
Verification
Before you can accept donations through Google Checkout, you must:
- Sign up as a Google Checkout merchant. When you sign up:
- Use your 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization's address.
- Make sure your EIN matches your non-profit organization's Tax ID number.
- After you sign up, select Non-Profit (IRS certified 501c3) as your Primary Product Type on the Settings page, then click Save profile.
- Complete the bank verification process in order to begin receiving payouts for your donations.
Creating Donate buttons
A Donate button is a clickable image you display on your website. When visitors click the Donate button, they'll be brought to the Google Checkout flow to make their donations. If you're selling physical goods for your non-profit organization, you can use standard Checkout Buy Now buttons.
A few minutes after you've set your primary product type to Non-Profit (IRS certified 501c3), you can generate our HTML code snippet to your website to display Donate buttons:
- Sign in to Google Checkout.
- Click the Tools tab.
- Click Donation buttons.
- Follow the instructions in donation button wizard onscreen.
- Click Create button code.
- Click any part of the code snippet in the box that appears at the bottom of the page. The entire code snippet will be highlighted.
- Click Copy to clipboard.
- Paste the code snippet in an appropriate location on your website.
You may not alter the appearance or functionality of Donate buttons in any way.
Alternatively, you can integrate your site with Google Checkout via the API to collect and process donations systematically. Working with the API requires programming experience. Learn more about the Google Checkout API in the Developer's Guide.
Processing donations
Once you update your website's HTML with our pre-generated Donate button code, you can start accepting donations immediately. Donations will be charged automatically. However, you can review donation orders in the Google Checkout Merchant Center at any time. Here's how:
- Sign in to Google Checkout. Your orders inbox will appear.
- Click the order number in your inbox to view the donation details.
For instructions on processing donations using the Google Checkout API, please review our Developer's Guide.
Badges
As a non-profit organization, you're eligible to display Checkout badges on your AdWords ads.
